Roman Mikhailov
Biography
Roman Valeryevich Mikhailov (Russian: Рома́н Вале́рьевич Миха́йлов; born October 2, 1978; Latvian SSR) is a Russian mathematician, writer, as well as screenwriter, theater director and film director. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2001, he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. In 2003, at the Steklov Mathematical Institute, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Filtration of groups, homology and engagement spaces", in 2004 he became an employee of the algebra department of the Institute. In 2010, he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic "Homotopy theory of normal series in groups". He was also an employee of the laboratory "Modern Algebra and Applications" of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of St. Petersburg State University, the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Institute of Chemical Physics of the University of Latvia. He is the author of more than 60 scientific papers, including a monograph and a series of articles jointly with Inder Bir Singh Passi. In 2022 Mikhailov announced the completion of his scientific activities. Mikhailov's prose was highly appreciated by the writer Mikhail Elizarov and the philosopher Yoel Regev. The editor of Kommersant magazine called Mikhailov's novel "Ravinagar" "more a magical object than a work of art". In 2020, quotes from his books served as the title and epigraph of the Second Triennial of Contemporary Russian Art. The play "The Tale of the Last Angel", staged by Andrei the Mighty based on Mikhailov's stories, received the Golden Mask Award in 2021. In 2021, he became the winner of the Andrei Bely Prize in the prose category for the novel "Wait for Summer and See what Happens." In October 2022, Mikhailov's directorial film debut was released — the film "A Fairy Tale for the Old", which Roman shot together with actor Fyodor Lavrov; both of them played the main roles in the film. For the first time, the painting was shown as part of the Spirit of Fire festival, where it received a prize. According to Mikhailov, "A Fairy Tale for the Old" is "an esoteric treatise or just a fairy tale". Mikhailov's second film "Snow, Sister and Wolverine" was released in theaters in February 2023, the third "Heritage" — in June of the same year. Almost simultaneously, the shooting of another picture "October Vacation" was completed. "Let's Go to Macau With You" is his fourth film, released in 2023.
